GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Farmers across the country are dealing with a little more than just cold crops right now.
The Food and Drug Administration proposed two new regulations for food safety.
This is the first time in over 70 years that the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act will be significantly updated.
"The key here is that it's an integrated approach and that we're moving from a responsive, I should say, a reactive, regulatory structure to something that's very proactive - to prevent problems before they even happen," said Doctor James Gorney, FDA’s Senior Advisor of Product Safety.
Local farmers aren't too concerned about the proposed regulations.
In fact, the western slope tree fruit production hasn't had any problems with food production in over a century.
"We are highly, highly motivated to do everything we can to make sure our food is safe; as are all of the producers in our region," said Charlie Talbott, co-owner of Talbott Farms.
The proposed regulations are in a 120 day comment period right now.
Once that's over, the FDA will look over the comments and purpose a final rule.
