FRUITA, Colo. The price for not taking care of the snow on your sidewalk is about to go up in Fruita. The first offense for not shoveling the snow in front of your home or business is currently only $10.00, but in 30 days, that fine will go up to $75.00 and can be up to $150.00 for a second offense.

The changes are being received with mixed reviews from residents.

"Bravo for the enforcement," said Fruita resident Betty Lou Lindsay.

"It's the right thing to do for our community," said Jen Zeuner, the owner of The Hot Tomato.

"I support it obviously because it's the city, but I'm not a fan, I don't really think it's good," said Max Snazzy, Sales Manager at Over the Edge in Fruita.

The City of Fruita says it hopes the increase in fines will help enforcement. Officials also say the tactic will be one more tool to help ensure the sidewalks remain safe.

Officials with the Grand Junction Police Department say officers can write tickets for those who refuse to comply and they say the fines for the City of Grand Junction vary on a case by case basis, the court decides the fine.

The new Fruita fines for not complying with their snow shoveling ordinance will go into effect in 30 days.
