For many local residents it's time to hit the slopes and Powderhorn Mountain Resort kicked off the season today with a Champagne toast at the first run.

"Prove that you really want the snow, it was good snow and it was worth it to get up early and get those nice turns," said Brian McConnell.

Others said its a tradition to get out as early as possible each year.

"It was really cool all the people who got off the lift first went down together as a group the whole time going down so there was lots of yelling it was good times," said McConnell.

Powderhorn staff say they were a little worried about opening this week, but the snow on Friday night was exactly what they needed to start the season off right.

"We were really nervous last week whether we were going to open or not and the snow came and I just skied down equalizer in knee deep powder and its a great start to the year," said Part-owner Tom Gart.

Those who needed to warm up and recharge after a few hours on the slopes were able to head into the lodge.

"We have artists and vendors throughout the base lodge weve opened up a new coffee shop and then some new food options at the sunset grill this year," said General Manager Daren Cole.

Powderhorn staff say visitors can look forward to new events each weekend night to spice up the season.
