Update: Eastbound I-70 now open

MESA COUNTY, Colo. Update: 6:30 p.m. -- The Eastbound lanes of I-70 near Parachute are now open. Westbound traffic is being diverted to Highway 6.

Heavy rain along I-70 has shut down the interstate in both directions near Parachute. A thunderstorm brought heavy rain and lightning to Western Colorado Friday afternoon, causing rain to puddle in several areas.

At 2:40 p.m. the National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated slow moving thunderstorms with very heavy rainfall across the warned area.

These storms will be capable of generating a large amount of rain in a very short period of time over the Pine Ridge burn scar, 10 miles southwest of Debeque.

Amounts upwards of 0.5 inches of rainfall could result in flash flooding, mud, ash, and debris flow across the adjacent burn area.
