GUNNISON, Colo.(KKCO) – Expect to see some major smoke near Gunnision this holiday season.

Gunnison National Forest plans to burn approximately 700 slash piles in several locations on the Gunnison Ranger District. The pile burning areas are located on the Alpine Plateau, southwest of Gunnison, Taylor Park, near Waunita Pass, north of Sargents, and in Tomichi Creek.

Burning the slash piles will reduce vegetation concentrations, reduce effects from insect and disease infestations, and provide conditions to help natural re-vegetation in the project areas.

Forest management anticipates on burning piles between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. If you see smoke in the area, that most likely will be the source.
