COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- A former Colorado Springs police officer who investigators say falsely accused an estranged boyfriend of choking her has pleaded guilty to attempting to influence a public official.
Sydney Huffman pleaded guilty Monday. She had accused former Manitou Springs police officer Jarrott Martinez of attacking her in 2010. He was acquitted, and the city of Colorado Springs agreed to pay him $480,000 in a settlement.
The Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/11SLqtu ) Huffman's attorney Karen Steinhauser said in court that Huffman had been prepared to fight the allegations at trial but changed her mind after learning she was pregnant. Steinhauser said Huffman didn't want to risk a miscarriage.
Prosecutor Amy Fitch countered that Huffman and her attorneys were told trial could be postponed until after Huffman had given birth.
