DENVER (AP) Former Rep. Bob Beauprez is filing paperwork to run for governor.

Beauprez filed an affidavit declaring his candidacy with the Colorado Secretary of State's office on Monday. He is a late entry into a crowded field of Republicans looking to challenge Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper in November.

Beauprez's run has been widely expected. He is a former two-term congressman who badly lost the 2006 governor's race. But because Beauprez has run statewide before and is wealthy enough to fund his own campaign he could be a formidable candidate.

Other candidates in the Republican primary are former Rep. Tom Tancredo, Secretary of State Scott Gessler, State Sen Greg Brophy and former State Sen Mike Kopp.
