Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- The Grand Junction Regional Airport is moving forward with a terminal building expansion project.
A 2011 study proved it would be more cost efficient to replace the building rather than continuing to maintain it.
Phase one is the first part of the project and within the next 30 days, construction on 22,000 square foot administrative building will begin, which will include an airport fire station, community room and offices for employees.
Construction on phase one is expected to last 12 months and when it is complete, the next phases will be figured out.
Amy Jordan, Deputy Director of Administration at the Airport, said the next phases will include a remodel of the ticketing counter, security area and gates.
This full plan is expected to take 10 to 15 years to complete as officials said they want to have as little interference with airport operations as possible.
