GJ, Montrose celebrate Earth Day

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- April 22 is Earth Day, and environmental groups around the world will organize rallies and demonstrations to help raise awareness about environmental concerns..

The first Earth Day was April 22, 1970 is credited with starting the modern environmental movement. An estimated 20 million Americans participated in the first celebration.

Now, more than 40 years later, Earth Day is observed by a billion people in 180 nations around the world.

Locally, Estillos II on Main is hosting a cut-a-thon. For just $22, you get a haircut, shampoo and style. Proceeds from the Earth Day deal will go toward protecting Colorado’s water.

You can walk in from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. No appointment is necessary.

Monday through Thursday, the Colorado National Monument is waving its entrance fee to celebrate National Parks Week, which traditionally falls around Earth Day.

In Montrose, you can help keep the city clean as well on this Earth Day 2013. Montrose County will host a clean up of Chipeta Road from 3 to 5 p.m.

Several organizations are teaming up for a week of events to help celebrate earth week. Every day, there will be daily lectures and children’s book readings at the Montrose Regional Library.

Also as part of the Earth Week festivities, the City of Montrose sponsors its annual spring cleanup, Thursday through Saturday. For a full list of events, click the link below.
