Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) – The Grand Junction speech and debate team, has set a school record sending six students to this years national tournament. Qualifying for the national is highly competitive, as high school students on the Western Slope only have one competition, to qualify for the national tournament.

The six students will compete in three different categories, public forum, Lincoln Douglas, and duo interpretation. It's a tournament their coach says they won't forget as they have worked long and hard to get to this point.

"It’s the type of thing they will carry with them as I like to joke with them when I’m dead and gone they will still remember and value deeply their experience at this tournament," says Anthony Myers, head coach GJHS speech and debate team.

This year the national tournament will be held June 17 through the 23rd in Birmingham, Alabama.

Grand Junction has never had a national speech and national debate champion they hope to change that this year.
