GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- If you have a compassionate heart and a desire to stand up for victimized people, the Grand Junction Police Department wants your help.

The Victim Advocate Program is searching for volunteers (VAPS) who will offer support, comfort and information to victims of crimes or traumatic events. The VAPS work 12-hour shifts, responding in-person to a number of incidents.

If you are interested, contact Victim Services Coordinator Mary Harmeling at 970-549-5290 or email maryh@gjcity.org.

Starting the second week of March, the program will hold victim advocate training two nights a week for six weeks.

Since 1992, the Victim Services unit has helped victims with information, support and resources during ongoing investigations or court procedures.
