MESA COUNTY, Colo. Local girls are being given an opportunity to learn new life lessons and make a difference in their communities through running.
Girls On The Run is an after school program for girls between 3rd and 8th grade.
The girls are working towards completing in a 5k all while maturing and learning how to live a healthy lifestyle.
Organizers say the growth they see is incredible.
"We try to give girls the power to stand up to bullies," says GOTR Program Coordinator for Mesa County, Sharon Poling. "To learn how to say no to gossip, [and] to give back to their communities with community service projects."
Girls on the run mesa county was created in 2000 with two teams, 45 girls, and four or five coaches... this year they have 27 sites, 180 coaches and 800 girls.
But organizers say it's less about the running and the fundraising, than it is about watching girls mature into young women.
