GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- While many look forward to Christmastime for much of the year, some in the Grand Valley have had something extra to be excited about this week. Christmas Eve signaled the first time back on the ice for local skaters.
Grand Valley Skating Center opened its outdoor rink this week after warm fall weather pushed back opening day for more than a month.
"Last year, we were able to open in November mainly because it was a little colder at that point," said Curt Maki, operations manager for Grand Valley Skating Center. "This year, summer and fall kind of hung on a little longer than we wanted to, and then ten days ago we started getting cold temps and that really helped. The ice grabbed hold, and we're doing really well with it."
For some kids, it was the perfect Christmas gift.
"It really makes me feel like [my family] gets closer when we're teaching each other and talking to each other and interacting more, and I really feel like it helps to have it on Christmas too because it's really fun," said 11-year-old Ivy Seacrest.
The rink has public skate times seven days a week. To know more about the rink's schedule, click the link below.
