Grand Mesa Summit Challenge ends today

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Today wrapped up the Grand Mesa Summit Challenge Sled Dog Races.

36 racers competed over the last two days.

Some racers headed out there in hopes of qualifying for the World Championship Sprint Sled Dog Races, but that's not the case for all.

"There's guys up here that do it just for the sport. They're never going to win a medal but they're here just to do it," said Steve Bethka, Grand Mesa Summit Challenge organizer.

Despite the extra snow that had event organizers out Sunday morning at four to re-groom the trail; the Grand Mesa is a great location for the race because it challenges the racers with new heights.

"The altitude's really something that's a challenge for mushers; we usually don't mush at this high of altitude," said Bethka.

But none of that gets in the way of the racers fun weekend with their bust buds.

"That's the main reason is the dogs, it's all about the dogs," said John Perry, champion dog sled racer.
