Gun buyer may have to pay for faster background check

Grand Junction, Colo. (KKCO) - Gun control will no doubt be a hot item discussed when the Colorado legislative session opens next Wednesday. One bill lawmakers may bring forward would require gun buyers to pay for their own criminal background check.

Currently, the CBI does not charge a fee to perform a gun background check. Right now in the state of Colorado, 11,420 people are on a gun background waiting list with an estimated wait of more than nine days.

"You have one side of the gun issue that would say, 'Why do I need to pay $10 for to exercise my constitutional right?' On the other side if I pay$10, is the wait going to be 20 minutes again?” says Jerry Stehman, owner of Jerry’s Outdoor Sports.

Some gun owners say the state could save money by skipping a background check on people with a concealed carry permit. They also suggest that the state could use the National Instant Criminal Background Check System.
