GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Hundreds of drivers got a real fright this Halloween when they were arrested for drinking and driving.
During the annual “Heat Is On” crackdown at the end of October, 564 people were arrested for DUIs by Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement. Most of the arrests come from Denver.
The 2012 number is higher than last year’s. The crackdown spanned from Oct. 26 to Nov. 1.
October has been the deadliest month on Colorado roads in years past. Last month, 43 people died in 32 crashes statewide. Twelve of them were attributed to drugs or alcohol. Between Oct. 26 and Nov. 1, three people died in three alcohol/drug-related crashes.
In 2011, ten people died in alcohol-related accidents, 17 died the year before that, and 26 were killed in 2009.
The next “Heat Is On” campaign starts during Thanksgiving week, from Nov. 20 to Nov. 26.
