GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Non-profit organizations are always looking for ways to raise money. The Center for Independence decided to get creative with their fundraising, by enlisting the help of a few pink birds.
Instead of sending a birthday card, The Center for Independence suggests you 'flock' a yard. The CFI’s new fundraiser is an innovative way to raise money and make someone smile.
Many of us have had a friend or family member that's tough to buy for. You know the one, the person who has you scratching your head when it comes to buying a gift.
For her 93rd birthday, Dorothy Sullivan's friends found something she never expected.
“I got flocked, I really did. I was dumbfounded, I didn't know what to expect. All I could think of was somebody's got it in for me and they're gonna have fun," said Sullivan.
When Sullivan returned from her birthday dinner, 75 flamingo yard ornaments were placed in her front yard with a big sign that read "You've Been Flocked."
The Center for Independence helps individuals with disabilities live independently and all the proceeds from the Flamingo Flocking Rental Program goes to the non-profit.
“Brainstorming about something we could do that would be year-round, would be fun for the community, would bring some exposure to the center and would also be a way of just generating a little bit of money," said Linda Taylor, the Executive Director of The Center for Independence.
But why flamingos?
“The pink is just a way to highlight, it could be in the snow, it could be in the grass, it could be in the fall. There’s not a pink that stands out so much as a pink flamingo," said Taylor.
And for Sullivan she won't forget getting flocked on her 93rd birthday.
“It boosts your morale, I mean you think somebody has done something real great for you and it's gonna help not only me to lighten my spirits, which they go down now and then, but it'll help somebody else get a long- I hope," said Sullivan.
You can customize the Flamingo Flocking Rental Program by choosing the special event sign you want, any decorative themes and even the number of flamingos placed in the yard.
Officials at CFI say so far, Dorothy Sullivan, has had the biggest order to date with 75 flamingos in her yard.
The Flamingo Flocking Rental Program is available year-round and if you don't want to be flocked, you can purchase an "Anti-Flocking Insurance" program for protection. It will guarantee a flock of flamingos won't be placed in your yard.
