FRUITA, Colo. (KKCO) -- About 240 bales of hay go up in smoke in an overnight fire.

Around midnight, Lower Valley and Grand Junction Fire crews responded to 1022 22 Road after they got reports of a structure on fire.

When they arrived, they found towering flames coming from a huge stack of hay, according to Lower Valley Fire Captain Gene Holder.

No structures were threatened by the fire, so the firefighters decided not to use water on it and instead let it burn down. Holder said hay fire is hard to put out because it needs to be separated piece by piece and extinguished.

The fire is still burning, supervised by firefighters all night long. Holder said the hay owner will monitor the flames until 2 p.m. today, when a Lower Valley crew will return to pour water on it and fully extinguish it.
