GARFIELD COUNTY, Colo. A man died early Saturday morning when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with another vehicle on Highway 82 near Basalt. The names of both drivers are being held pending notification of their families.
At approximately midnight Saturday, a white Toyota sedan was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Highway 82 when it collided with a westbound Toyota SUV. The driver of the Toyota sedan was pronounced dead on scene. The driver of the SUV was transported to Valley View Hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening, injuries.
Highway 82 was closed in both directions for about four hours for the investigation, during which traffic was diverted onto a frontage around the crash scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol is being considered a possible contributing factor. The weather was clear and the road was dry at the time of the crash.
The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind everyone to always designate a sober driver. It’s a decision that will help keep the Colorado roadways safe for everyone.
