Hepatitis A outbreak attacks fruit

Palisade, Colo (KKCO) --- After a recent Hepatitis A outbreak was linked to berry fruit mixes at Costco, local fruit farmers are making sure their crops are not the next to be infected.

Steven Sherer, owner of Aloha Organic Fruit Farm, said after fruit is picked, they refrigerate it at 35 degrees and the cold temperature kills all the harmful pathogens that are attached to the fruit making it safe to eat.

Hepatitis A is extremely contagious and can be spread from food handlers not washing their hands when touching the products.

Sherer said his advice is to always wash fruit before eating it just to be on the safe side.
