Holiday binge drinking

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. It's that time of year when the holiday parties are one right after the other and according to a new survey, many use the occasion as an excuse to binge drink.

Caron Treatment Centers' online poll found 60% of adult respondents who attend holiday parties witnessed dangerous and even illegal behavior. Dr. Harris Stratyner, PhD, Regional Clinical Vice President of Caron Treatment Centers in New York says there are some do’s and don’ts for healthily handling the cocktail situation, while still having a good time.

Before and during the party, avoid greasy and salty foods and eat a balanced meal filled with nutrients and vitamins. Drinking on an empty stomach is never a good idea. Avoid carbonated water, as the carbonation will ‘chemically speed up’ intoxication. In addition, avoid coffee too. A common misconception is that it sobers you up, but it only results in a wide-awake intoxicated state. Lastly, don't have more than one or two drinks over the course of a few hours.
