GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- With the downtown tree lighting ceremony just last night and Thanksgiving less than a week away, some are getting inspired to start decorating for the holidays. The Grand Junction Fire Department has some safety tips as we head into the holiday season.

"You want to keep space heaters far enough away from anything that can light, such as pillows or papers," said Firefighter J.D. Sheffield.

One local resident said he likes to get a jump on holiday decorating, putting his lights up before the weather cools off. Greg Gnesios said as a retired park ranger, he takes fire safety pretty seriously.

"Never had any electrical issues, and it's one of those things, if you are one of those people who puts lights up yourself, you know the optimum thing is to get it so you can just flip one switch and everything will go on," said Gnesios.

Sheffield said it's important not to over power your outlets and beware of wiring in old homes.

Both agree that when it comes to Christmas tree placement, be sure to put it in a place away from any source of heat.
