Honoring Western Slope Veterans

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A special Memorial Day ceremony honored veterans and fallen heroes of the Western Slope Monday morning.

Community leaders, students, and family members of veterans came together for a ceremony put together by the Department of Military and Veteran Affairs.

The service was held at the Veterans Memorial Cementery to celebrate the lives of the men and women who have worked tirelessly to protect our rights and freedoms.

"They deserve this type of recognition every year and in our prayers every day. Thank you for the freedom,” says Senator King.

Western Slope veterans' organizations sponsored a wreath placing portion of the ceremony and shots were fired to honor veterans that are no longer with us.

Officials hope to pass on to the youth of the community that Memorial Day is not just a three day weekend, it's an opportunity to recognize all that our nation has become because of our service men and women.
