Honoring the fallen

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. Every year during the month of May, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office honors their fallen colleagues across the country by placing a wreath on the headstone of Deputy Edward Innes.

Innes, who was once the undersheriff for the Mesa County Sheriff's Office, is only one of two officers to ever be killed in the line of duty in Mesa County; he died in 1906.

The other was in 2001 when acting Chief of the Fruita Police Department, Daniel Dalley, was killed in a traffic accident.

MCSO has placed a wreath on Innes' headstone every year for the past seven years.

Sunday marks the beginning of 'police week' which mesa county began to recognize and celebrate under the leadership of sheriff hilkey.
