Horizon Drive standoff ends in arrest

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- A man surrenders to police after a nearly six-hour standoff in a motel.

The incident began when Grand Junction Police detectives learned that 23-year-old Skylar Kesterson was inside a first floor room of the Mesa Inn around 5:45 Thursday afternoon, according to a release from the GJPD.

Kesterson was wanted on multiple felony warrants and suspected of committing armed robbery at the Check into Cash store in the Rimrock Shopping Center in September 2012.

Officers arrived at the Mesa Inn to convince Kesterson to come out peacefully. During negotiations, police saw that Kesterson was armed with a gun.

As negotiations came to a standstill, the GJPD SWAT team was called in to assist.

For hours, Kesterson refused to surrender, so just after 11:30 p.m., the SWAT team threw tear gas into the room. Kesterson emerged minutes later and gave up.

Before the situation was resolved, officers had evacuated the motel rooms near Kesterson's. Nearby homes, motels and businesses were told to shelter in place and lock their doors.

A portion of Horizon Drive by Mesa Inn was closed down during the incident, so drivers were redirected around the scene.
