In fact, a new report by the Pew Research Foundation finds a record one in five households now owe student loan debt.
That's more than double the number of households that owed student loans just twenty years ago, and it’s a steep rise from 2007, just before the recession hit.
Since then, student debt has gone up in nearly every demographic and economic category,
The average household balance due has gone from just over $23,000 in 2007 to almost $27,000 in 2010.
