GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) A brand new body scanner will allow the Mesa County Sheriff's Office to identify potential threats before they happen.
The new scanner has officially been installed and will be up and running for incoming inmates no later than November 1st.
The scanner helps deputies identify hidden contraband by highlighting the foreign objects on a screen nearby.
"For officers it's less staff intensive where you need two officers of the same sex to complete a strip search," says Captain Steve Farlow. "You get contraband in the facility then you have potential security issues for staff or inmates, for the entire facility. This'll make it safer for everybody."
Well-hidden contraband can sometimes go undetected since only certain inmates can be strip searched; Captain Farlow says the scanner will help eliminate those cases.
The $160,000 scanner was purchased with leftover funds from the recent remodeling of their booking area.
