Increasing life expectancy through exercise

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) It is just as dangerous and bad for your health as smoking... inactivity.

According to the American Heart Association, 54% of women and 44% of men don't meet the federal guidelines for recommended amount of physical activity in adults.

A new report out today shows health experts recommend doctors take an extra step in ensuring their patients get the exercise they truly need.

"Exercise has been shown to decrease rates of obesity, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and heart disease," says Dr. Andrew Morse.

The Heart Association says people should exercise for at least thirty minutes, five times a week.

And recommends breaking up those thirty minutes into smaller, ten to fifteen minute segments.

Research shows that in the US, lack of activity can decrease life expectancy by up to three years.
