ASPEN, Colo. (AP) The Pitkin County Coroner's Office says a longtime Aspen resident who collapsed and died while cycling near the summit of Independence Pass suffered a heart attack.

An emergency room nurse and an EMT passing by on their way to a wilderness expedition stopped to help 51-year-old Steve Menscher on Saturday afternoon, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Friend Jonathan Birnkrant was riding with Menscher and another less-experienced rider. He told the Aspen Daily News they were riding at a slower pace than usual, and Menscher was considered an experienced rider.
