GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- The trial of Eric Janusz, former firefighter and police officer, is now in the hands of the jury.

Today's proceedings started with instructions for the jury from Judge Robison and then proceeded to closing arguments.

The prosecution reiterated their argument Janusz was a man of the law who used his position of trust to take advantage of the victim when she was underage. They went through a timeline of the alleged incidents in order to clearly chronicle their version of events for the jury.

According to the prosecution, the defense has many discrepancies in the case. Furthermore, saying Janusz wouldn't admit to obvious facts when on the stand and said he isn't credible.

Janusz listened to the arguments in court while holding his wife's hand.

Then his defense began closing statements. They asked the jury to look at the facts and not judge Janusz's moral ethics. The defense proceeded to point out discrepancies in the timeline of events saying the prosecution stretched out the timeline of the first sexual encounter between Janusz and the victim to fit their timeline of events for the case built against Janusz.

The prosecution painted Janusz as a man with no remorse for his sexual conduct and used a Facebook conversation as proof the two did engage in sexual relations when the victim was underage.

Both sides concur Janusz and the victim had a sexual relationship in 2004 and in 2011. The charges come from alleged encounters in 2000.

Janusz is facing two counts of sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and one count of sexual assault as a pattern of abuse.

The jury began deliberations around noon and are still working on reaching a verdict.
