DENVER (AP) -- A judge has ruled that a man accused of killing and dismembering a 16-year-old girl in Denver is competent to stand trial.

The Denver Post reports District Judge Shelley Gilman made the decision Friday in the case of Edward Timothy Romero, who is charged in the October 2010 shooting death of Alicia Martinez.

Police say Martinez disappeared after attending a party at Romero's home. Her body was later found in the man's basement.

Gilman relied on an October examination that determined Romero has the capacity to understand court proceedings and participate in his own defense.

Romero has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
