Kids Voting still struggling

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) A local non-profit used to encourage students to be politically aware has been struggling financially, but an event was held Thursday night to help rally support.

The nonpartisan kids voting program has been running mock elections for kindergarten through 12th grade students in Mesa County since 1996; but because of a decrease in donations over the past few years, funding has been scarce.

The program has been an essential and hands-on part of civics education for District 51 students.

"Instead of learning in a government class they're being taught throughout their entire schooling career," says high school senior and Kids Voting board secretary, Wade Toothaker. "By the time its their turn to vote, it's just something they do."

WPX Energy came forward and made a generous donation of $15,000 to help fund the program.
