GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO)-- A local artist's work is being honored at the most important annual event in thoroughbred racing.

Tesha Hammonds-- a local equine artist-- created a horse figurine named "Godspeed," which was won an art competition, sponsored by the "Trail of the Painted Ponies."

The figurine will be auctioned off at the Breeder's Cup Classic at the Santa Anita Race Track in California this weekend.

The Breeder's Cup Classic showcases the best racing thoroughbreds in the world. Hammonds says creating the piece was an artistic challenge.

"There are so many different breeds, and you have to know each breed, because they have different qualities. Of course they look different; it's quite a challenge," said Hammonds.

The actual figurine itself is already in California. All proceeds from the auction will benefit the Race Track Chaplaincy of America, which overseas the spiritual needs of all those working in the horse racing industry.

Hammonds has been an equine artist for more than 30 years. For more information on Tesha Hammond's work, visit her website (you can find a link below under Related Links).
