GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - Images of the Grand Valley are now in Times Square; it's the latest push to increase tourism to Western Colorado.
Last year, Trip Advisor advertised us as one of the top 10 places for wine in the United States.
Now, local organizations are looking to attract more people to our area.
The Grand Junction Visitor and Convention Bureau partnered with the Grand Junction Economic Partnership in an effort to expand our community's profile, by showcasing what the Valley has to offer on a billboard in the Big Apple.
"There's no better place to advertise, you have people from all over the globe there everyday," said Kelly Flenniken, with the Grand Junction Economic Partnership.
The new billboard, measuring 20 feet by 26 feet is showing the crowd some of the most exciting aspects of Mesa County.
"We're showcasing images of what it's like to live in the Grand Valley so we've got images talking about the wine industry, talking about the outdoor industry and really showing the beauty that is in Mesa County," said Flenniken.
The organizations are hopeful the advertisement will bring more than just tourists.
"We're really hoping that this can be maybe that one last thing that is going to tip the scale and make a business consider Mesa County as a location," said Flenniken.
With Palisade wineries just minutes away, The Grand Valley is already a destination for wine enthusiast.
"Visit vineyards, meet the farmers, meet the wine makers and have that really interactive experience. That's something you can't really get in Denver or New York or those bigger places," said Cassidee Shull, executive director of the Colorado Association for Viticulture and Enology.
The Times Square billboard is expected to be shown more than 3,200 times, and viewed by over 300,000 people each day.
The VCB and GJEP are hoping viewers will consider taking advantage of the tourist attractions here or relocating businesses to Mesa County.
If you are planning a trip to the Big Apple before April 14th, check out the billboard in person; it's located at 42nd and 7th street.
