Locals give back on Christmas day

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Many enjoyed the day off and stayed warm in their homes, but some local residents saw the holiday as day to give back to the less fortunate.

The Catholic Outreach soup kitchen opened its doors to those in need in an effort to make sure everyone in the Grand Valley has a hot meal on Christmas.

"I think that we should all be doing that. It's a beautiful thing to make a difference in somebody's day, somebody's life," said local resident Tammy Martin.

Martin has been coming out to the soup kitchen every Christmas for the past 17 years to hand out Long-Johns and gloves. This year, Martin brought her granddaughter Jenika to lend a hand and give out stockings to the kids.

"It makes me feel sad, but when I give it to them, it makes me feel like they are happy now," said Jenika.

Volunteers at the soup kitchen said around 200 people showed up for the Christmas chili meal.
