Losing additional civics learning in the classroom

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) Ballots are on their way to your mailbox and most voters are busy researching the candidates and the issues.

But one group that helps teach our children about the intricacies of civics and voting may not be around much longer.

Kids Voting has been in Mesa County for 17 years, but things are looking grim for an 18th year.

"We've lost funding from the county, the city of Grand Junction has cut their funding in half and they've been able to just keep it up a little bit," says Kids Voting Mesa County Director, Marth Graf. "That's hit us hard and we've lost a couple of significant individual donors."

Tuesday evening, Kids Voting Mesa County is holding 'Civics at Sunset' event.

It will feature open discussion about the organization and community leaders will speak about it's impact on responsible citizenship.

The event will be held at the Springhill Suites on Main Street in Grand Junction from 5:30 - 7:00 p.m.
