Man in custody after manhunt in downtown Denver

DENVER (AP) -- Denver police have taken a man into custody after a search of a downtown office building for a suspect.

Officers were looking for 28-year-old Robert Jackson, who is wanted in Aurora in a domestic violence case, when a man they approached Monday ran into the Petroleum Building. Officers with rifles swept the area, and the building was evacuated.

Police spokesman Sonny Jackson says the man in custody prompted the search of the building -- but it wasn't Robert Jackson, who also has felony warrants out of Centennial for robbery and escape.

Police identified the man in custody as 21-year-old Joseph Smith of Denver. It's not clear why Smith ran from officers, but Sonny Jackson tells KMGH-TV in Denver that Smith has been in trouble with the law before.
