CORTEZ, Colo. (AP) A 20-year-old man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison in the shooting death of a pregnant woman in Cortez last year.

The Cortez Journal reports Jeroen Begay was sentenced Tuesday in the September 2013 death of 21-year-old Natalie Hatch.

Prosecutors say Begay shot Hatch with a shotgun while she was standing in the doorway of her apartment. An 18-year-old man inside was wounded.

Begay pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in July. Prosecutors agreed to drop charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder in exchange.

Hatch's father, Frederick Hatch Jr., spoke at the sentencing. District Attorney Will Furse read a statement written by her mother, Christine Hatch. They described their daughter as their pride and joy and said she was full of wonder and curiosity.
