Meeker tree to be lit at U.S. Capitol today

WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Speaker John Boehner will light the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree during a ceremony on the West Front lawn.

The tree will be lit during a ceremony Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Capitol. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. The program will feature holiday music played by the U.S. Air Force Band.

This year's tree is from the White River National Forest in Colorado. The 65-foot Engelmann Spruce traveled more than 5,000 miles to arrive at the Capitol last week. It's decorated with 10,000 lights and thousands of ornaments made by the people of Colorado.

The theme for this year's tree is "Celebrating our Great Outdoors."

The tree will be lit each night from dusk until 11 p.m. through Dec. 26.
