GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - This flu season is not wrapping up anytime soon.

It might be slowing down across the nation with the number of flu cases going down; but in Colorado, we're seeing quite the opposite.

The number of flu cases in Mesa County went up after dropping over the last few weeks.

Unfortunately, this spike is even higher than it was three weeks ago.

Health officials can't pin point the exact cause of the rise, but they are trying to figure it out to keep the numbers down.

"It probably has a lot to do with the weather right now. It's colder, people are staying indoors and they're in groups," said Paul Sweeney, with the VA Medical Center.

This flu season is unpredictable and health officials say one of the only ways to protect yourself and your family is to get a flu shot.

Over 50 residents did just that today by going to the Good Samaritan Clinic that is offered once a month.

Today they offered flu shots along with other services by their volunteer staff.

"The flu has been huge this year. This has been one of the worse years for flu in recent history. So the flu shot is really important and one of the cool things about it is, because it's donated, anyone can come get it and it's free," said Brian Watson, with the Good Samaritan Clinic.

If you weren’t able to get your flu shot today at the clinic, there are other chances.

The VA Medical Center offers free shots to veterans Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

On Wednesday they also have a free drive up clinic from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Mesa County Health Department also offers the flu shot, check out health.mesacounty.us for hours.
