MESA COUNTY, Colo. Mesa County is still lagging behind the rest of the state in unemployment as the July numbers show only a slight drop.

Over all Mesa County is still an entire percentage point behind the state unemployment rate, now down to 5.3 percent.

The new numbers only show a 0.2 percent decrease - from 6.5 percent to 6.3 percent - but Suzie Miller with the Mesa County Workforce Center says that it's a step in the right direction.

“It's always hopeful and positive when we can see the unemployment rate drop even if it is by a couple of tenths of a percentage point,” said Miller.

Last July the unemployment rate was 8.3 percent and more than 1,100 people were on unemployment.

This July that number has dropped to just over 800 people filing for unemployment and officials said they expect those numbers to continue to decrease for the next few months.
