Mesa County unemployment drops to 8.8 pct

MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KKCO) -- More people finding jobs or dropping out of the labor force contributes to a decreasing unemployment rate in the Grand Valley.

The Mesa County jobless rate was 8.8 percent in March, compared to 9.1 percent in February, according to the Mesa County Workforce Center.

Still, it's a far cry from March 2008's rate of 3.7 percent. This year's number is the same as 2009's: 8.8 percent.

In 2010, the unemployment rate for March hit its peak of 12.1, dropping to 11.2 percent in 2011 and 10 percent in 2012.

However, Workforce Center Administrator Jessica Marler says she's seen one good sign of an improving economy: 2013's year-to-date job listings are surpassing 2008's. Right now, 281 jobs are listed with the workforce center.

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment reports the statewide unemployment rate dropped to 7.1 percent in March from last month's 7.2 percent.

The national jobless numbers decreased to 7.6 percent in March from 7.7 percent in February.
