GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.-- On January 1st, we celebrate New Year’s by watching fireworks and popping champagne.
But for one Grand Valley family, January 1st is going to be more than just a new year from now on.
“It’s going to be a great 2016 and there’s not a better way we could’ve started,” said Amanda Osborn, the mother of Aksel Christian Beckham Irion, the first baby to be born in 2016 in Mesa County.
At seven pounds, four ounces and 19 inches long , Aksel was born exactly at two in the morning.
“We’re pretty ecstatic,” Osborn said. “It definitely was not planned. But I think he’s a little rock star.”
Aksel is also the first son and child for Osborn and her husband, Lars Irion, as well as the first grandchild on his father’s side of the family.
Aksel is a Norwegian name while his first middle name, Christian, is a family name. His second middle name is a real kicker. It comes from his father’s favorite soccer player David Beckham.
“I think he’s just going to be a stud,” said Irion. “So he’s got to have a cool dude name.”
Mom and dad said they’re overwhelmed with joy.
“We’re pretty happy that he’s healthy and that Amanda’s doing awesome,” Irion said. “It’s like all that you can hope for.”
The family said celebrating New Year’s Day from now on will be amazing.
“He’s going to get fireworks every year for his birthday, so that’ll be sweet,” Irion said. “I’ll always have that day off to spend time with him.”
