MONTROSE, Colo. (KKCO) -- The body of a hiker who went missing on Sunday has been found in Black Canyon.
Gunnison National Park rangers started searching for the backpacker when they found his car at a trailhead on Sunday. The man had purchased a backcountry permit that showed he would leave the park on Saturday.
Rangers searched the hiker's route but could not find any signs of him.
On Tuesday, search and rescue workers discovered the backpacker's body about 1,000 feet below the canyon's south rim. They believe he fell and sustained fatal injuries as he was hiking in the area.
Rescue crews are still trying to retrieve the body, but the late-winter storm in the region is reducing visibility and making it hard to access it.
The identity of the victim has not been released, pending identity confirmation and notification of family.
The National Park Service will be working with the Montrose County Sheriff's Office as the recovery and investigation move forward.
