Mother of slain toddler devoted to abuse prevention

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) -- Next Thursday marks the one year anniversary of 19-month-old Owen Reak's death, after he was fatally beaten by his mother's then-boyfriend.

Now, Owen's mother, Amber, is actively working to help other families avoid a similar tragedy in their own homes.

Amber Reak is launching an educational program called "Owen's Rules” to expose the truth about child abuse. The organization stands for "Observe, Witness, Educate and Network."

Reak said it's important for other single mothers to be observant and recognize the warning signs of abuse before it's too late for their own kids.

"All the signs that I missed-- now that hindsight is 20-20, I could see all the different signs that he was not a normal two-year-old," said Reak.

Although Reak missed the signs, she said she finds comfort in knowing she's helping other single mothers fight child abuse.
