Multiple agencies extinguish large brush fire on Highway 141

A fire flares up between Gateway and Whitewater Saturday night, and multiple agencies work to put it out.

The Gateway Unaweep Fire Protection District received a call about a large brush fire around 5:45 p-m. The fire was near mile marker 138 on Highway 141. Flames were spreading quickly due to some strong winds and the fire threatened a nearby house.

There were only two firefighters on duty for Gateway, and it was going to take them about 40 minutes to respond, so they called for back up. The Bureau of Land Management, Lands End Fire Department and Sheriff's Office arrived to help.

"We don't hesitate calling mutual aid from all of the outside departments and sheriff's department and everyone else. We really appreciate their help," Gateway Unaweep Fire Protection District fire chief David Anderson said.

The group was able to extinguish the fire that was just over an acre in size. Authorities say the homeowners helped protect their home by cutting their own fire line. The BLM also provided two air tankers for support.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
