Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) ---

A Quagga and Zebra mussel infestation in Lake Powell is raising concerns at Highline Lake. Park officials are warning boaters to take the proper precautions to protect their boats and the lake.

New protocol has been implemented to check and disinfect boats before allowing them in Highline Lake. Officials urge boaters to clean, drain and dry their boats to prevent water transferring from one lake to another.

If boating for long periods of time, the mussels will attach to and ruin the boats motor. Another concern is the damage these mussels cause to fisheries because they are plankton feeders and pull the entire first level of the food chain out of the water.

As long as boaters are cautious, this can be prevented from spreading to lakes close to home.
