GRAND JUNCTION, Colo (KKCO) -- More than 64 million Americans suffer from one or more forms of cardiovascular disease.
February is National Heart Health month, to bring awareness about steps you can take to reduce the risk of heart disease.
Having high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, congestive heart failure, stroke and congenital heart defects can all lead to heart disease.
Good eating habits, exercising on a regular basis, avoiding tobacco use and taking advantage of preventive screenings, can all reduce your risk of the leading cause of death in the United States.
"If you're a person that doesn't go to the doctor regularly it would be a good idea to get a screening done or lab work done with your doctor to see where your levels are at," says Maria Hernandez-Hunt, with Colorado Heart Healthy Solutions.
In support of National Heart Health Month, Mesa County Health Department is providing free cardiovascular screenings for residents 18 years of age and older who are uninsured or underinsured.
