New fees for camping along Colorado River

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) – This weekend is Memorial Day, which means some happy campers, but before you pack up and head out, there are a few things you should know.

This year there are new regulations for camping for the Ruby - Horsethief stretch of the Colorado River. This year, there is a new permit system that requires you to reserve your campsite ahead of time and pay a small camping fee.

"We had about 2500 people float down the river last year, and we just kind of needed a permit system because they're was a lot of confusion over who had what site and stuff like that, so we're trying to make this a more easier trip for people to make so they can plan a head," Ali Bickford said.

The money from the fees goes right back into that area they are collected from. The fees are based on the your group size. North Fruita Desert and Mud Springs are the only other two BLM camping places you need to pay for.

Other BLM camping spots are free, as long as you only leave your footprints behind.

Contact the BLM at 970-244-3050 to reserve your campsite. You can also just walk in to the BLM office located by the airport.
