New nutrition standards in schools

Grand Junction, Colo (KKCO) --- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has put forth an initiative to place nutritional standards on food in schools.

These include decreased fat, sugar and salt and food must contain at least 50-percent whole grains or have fruit, vegetable, dairy or protein.

Dan Sharp, Director of Nutrition Services, said District 51 has already started complying with these standards. They have reduced sodium in many things and have added fruit, vegetables and low-fat and non-fat milk.

Schools have until July 1st, 2014 to comply with these new regulations and they will go into effect for the 2014-2015 school year.
